01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Sugamo Togenuki Fukujian Wagashi, the first sweet to catch your eye may be the “Meibutsu Koboreru Ohagi,” generously topped with azuki bean paste that almost completely covers the mound of glutinous rice. The chunky azuki paste is made from beans grown in Tokachi, Hokkaido, and cooked with care; its sweetness is kept in check, bringing out the pleasantly chewy grains of Hakuchō mochi rice, also from Hokkaido. With each spoonful, the rich aroma of azuki comes through, yet the ohagi feels light enough to enjoy to the last bite.

Another signature sweet, the “Shodai Siberia Roll,” wraps smooth, moist koshi-an—strained azuki bean paste—in a soft, fluffy castella sponge. The fine-textured sponge melts gently alongside the filling’s clean sweetness. You can enjoy a whole roll or start with a quarter cut for a smaller taste.

For a sweet with a salty edge, there is salted-bean daifuku, notable for its unusual cylindrical shape. The mochi is springy yet cuts cleanly, while the beans, seasoned with a measured touch of salt, meet the chunky azuki filling; their sweet-and-salty contrast lingers.

The counter also features a range of Japanese sweets, including “Shin-Shokkan Mocchiri Baby Castella,” baked without oil for a chewy texture; mitarashi dango coated in a fragrant dashi-scented sauce; and warabi mochi with a tender, yielding texture and a hint of kuromitsu. The shop focuses on takeaway, making it an easy stop for a sweet to enjoy while strolling along Sugamo Jizō-dōri Shopping Street, or for choosing a treat to take home for tea.
